Responsive Sustainability takes a holistic and justice-based approach to sustainability and recognizes that all people, plants and animals across the globe are connected and deserve basic health and safety.
Responsive Sustainability practices "slow sustainability" meaning that the focus of individual efforts and initiatives is not immediate, trackable change-although we certainly welcome it!- but it is on long-term values and behavior changes. Responsive Sustainability operates under the belief that to really address our current sustainability needs then we need to start by reprioritizing our value system. We've chosen to use term "sustainable" when we could have also used "renewable", "regenerative" and similar terms, the underlying goal is systemic change that ensures our world is functional for human and non-human life in 1,000 years and beyond.
The United Nations Sustainable Development goals define “sustainability” as ecological, social and financial health as well as individual and collective well-being. This broad definition allows room for you to chart your own path in ways there are personally and professionally meaningful.
Please get in touch if you would like to share ideas or have further discussions about how Responsive Sustainability can support your projects and initiatives.
We are also told that our individual efforts don't matter. It is sometimes left to people to wonder if their sustainability are helpful. There is a pervasive feeling that the problems are to vast and overwhelming for us to have any impact, but the reality is that true impact with come from a paradigm shift in which sustainability actions are a manifestation of our connection to the world and to our own purpose.
There are as many different ways to practice sustainability as there are people in the world. Responsive Sustainability can work with you to identify ways that you can connect with sustainability and make it more accessible and meaningful in your everyday life. No recycling-no problem, there are many other ways you can be involved!
Engagement-the way the we interact with each other individually and collectively-is one of the most powerful tools in the sustainability movements. Today we are even more aware of the way that systematic racism has prevented full equality while it is easier than ever to recognize our common human as it is shared in real time through social media. Community engagement practices provide guidance on how to set up relationships in ways that honor the past while sharing power in current and future collaborations.
